With a restaurant, coffee bar, salon and nail bar it might sound like a holiday resort but instead it is a new £8m care home – which will bring up to 80 jobs to Norwich

Dr Sanjay Kaushal says that care homes are being taken to a new level.Dr Sanjay Kaushal says that care homes are being taken to a new level.

St John’s House care home is poised to open its doors at the start of October and the director of parent company Castlemeadow Care Group has promised it will provide luxury care to its residents.

Dr Sanjay Kaushal said: “With our care home in Norwich we are challenging the normal care home model, taking it to the next level.

“It is not just about you staying in your room but having the opportunity to engage with other residents. In the communal areas we will always have activities.”

The 60-bed facility will be on Heigham Road and Dr Kaushal said there would be between 65 and 80 jobs on the site.

The new facility is aiming for a boutique feel more in line with what you might expect to find at a hotel.

Dr Kaushal said: “People’s expectations are changing.

“In the past you accepted any care you were given, people never had much choice. People have worked hard all their lives, so why shouldn’t they expect the best?”

The Swanton Morley-based care group also has homes at Long Stratton and Swaffham and is part of a project to build a care complex at Halesworth.

While a number of care providers have spoken of a difficult climate, there continues to be money invested in the sector.

Robert Gibbs, commercial property partner at Birkett’s, said: “The private care home sector as far as I am concerned is extremely robust. Banks are lending when needed.

“Those that are successful are the care home providers that listen to their clients, their residents, want.

“They make them happy and they run their businesses in an organised and managed way.”
